This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Social Science geography textbook for Class VI, The Earth Our Habitat. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, exercises and captions are in English. It is the prescribed geography component of the Class 6 social science course for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
Geography at Class 6 level begins with the largest possible frame and narrows down. The book opens with the Earth's place in the solar system, moves to the globe and the grid of latitudes and longitudes, then to the Earth's rotation and revolution and what they produce — day and night, and the seasons. From there it turns to maps and how to read them: the difference between a map and a globe, scale, direction and conventional symbols. The second half moves from the general to the specific — the four major domains, the major landforms, and then India: its physical divisions, climate, natural vegetation and wildlife.
What makes this book useful beyond the school classroom is the same thing that makes it useful inside it. The explanations are short, the vocabulary is controlled, and the fundamental concepts of physical geography — the grid system, motions of the Earth, landform formation — are introduced without shortcuts. That is why aspirants preparing for UPSC, RPSC and RSSB examinations are routinely told to read the NCERT geography books from Class 6 onwards before touching any standard reference work. The concepts a candidate must be fluent in at the examination hall are set out here for the first time, in their simplest form.
Each chapter ends with exercises, and the text is supported throughout by diagrams, photographs and maps. The "Do You Know" boxes carry additional facts that frequently reappear as objective questions in competitive examinations.
