About this book

This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) social science geography textbook for Class VIII, Resources and Development. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, exercises, maps and captions are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is the prescribed geography component of the Class 8 social science course for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum. The book takes a single idea — the resource — and works it through the whole of geography. It opens by defining what makes something a resource at all, and distinguishes natural from human-made and human resources, renewable from non-renewable, and actual from potential stock. It then goes resource by resource: land, soil, water, natural vegetation and wildlife, with their distribution, degradation and conservation. Mineral and power resources covers metallic and non-metallic minerals, their distribution worldwide and in India, and conventional and non-conventional sources of power. Agriculture takes up farming types, major crops and their growing conditions, and compares farming in a developed and a developing country. Industries deals with classification, location factors and the major industries, with case studies. The last chapter, human resources, covers population distribution, density, growth and change. The Class 8 book is where the comparative, world-plus-India treatment of resources begins, and that is precisely the frame competitive examinations use. Distribution of minerals, cropping regions, power sources and population characteristics are standing topics in the UPSC, RPSC and RSSB syllabi, and this volume gives the pattern in its simplest form before Class 10 and Class 12 fill in the detail. Aspirants are routinely advised to read the NCERT geography books from Class 6 to Class 12 in sequence before starting on any standard reference work. The chapters are supported by maps, photographs, data tables, diagrams and boxed case studies, with in-chapter activities and full exercise sets including map work at the end.
