This is Indian Economic Development for Class XII by T.R. Jain and V.K. Ohri, published by VK Global Publications, Edition 2026-27. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, data tables, questions and answers are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is prepared for the CBSE Class 12 economics course, following the latest CBSE syllabus.
Indian Economic Development is one of the two halves of the Class 12 economics paper, the other being macroeconomics. The book follows the prescribed course: the Indian economy on the eve of Independence, covering agriculture, industry, foreign trade and demographic conditions under colonial rule; the planning years from 1950 to 1990, covering the goals of the five year plans, agriculture and the green revolution, industrial policy and the licence raj, and trade policy; economic reforms since 1991, covering liberalisation, privatisation, globalisation and an assessment of the reforms; poverty and anti-poverty programmes; human capital formation and education; rural development including credit, marketing and diversification; employment and its informalisation; infrastructure covering energy and health; environment and sustainable development; and the comparative development experience of India, China and Pakistan.
Jain and Ohri's economics books are the long-standing classroom standard for this subject, and the reason is the layout. Each topic is stated, developed, and then followed by the question forms the board uses — very short answer, short answer, long answer and objective — so the student reads and then immediately writes in the format the paper wants. Since this half of the paper is marked on whether an answer states the policy, its objective, its outcome and an evaluation in the syllabus's own terms, that arrangement is what makes the book usable for answer practice rather than only for reading.
The data tables and figures throughout are the ones a good answer cites. The book is used alongside the prescribed NCERT Indian Economic Development, which remains the source the board sets its questions on.
