This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) biology textbook for Class XII. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, diagrams, terminology and exercises are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is prescribed for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
The book is organised into five units. Reproduction covers sexual reproduction in flowering plants, human reproduction, reproductive health and the associated technologies. Genetics and evolution takes up the principles of inheritance and variation, the molecular basis of inheritance — DNA structure, replication, transcription, translation and regulation — and evolution from origin of life to human descent. Biology in human welfare deals with human health and disease, and microbes in human welfare. Biotechnology covers its principles and processes, and its applications in agriculture, medicine and gene therapy. The last unit is ecology: organisms and populations, ecosystems, biodiversity and conservation.
For NEET candidates this book occupies a position no other text does. Biology carries the largest share of the NEET paper, and a very high proportion of those questions are set on statements taken directly from the NCERT text — often on a single line in a paragraph, a figure caption or a table. Successful candidates do not merely read this book; they read it repeatedly until the wording is familiar, because the examiner's options are frequently built by altering a phrase from it. The molecular basis of inheritance, human reproduction and ecology chapters are the highest-yielding in the whole syllabus, and coaching material is a supplement to this text rather than a substitute for it.
For the board examination the same chapters are examined through diagram-based, reasoning and application questions, and the labelled diagrams — the human reproductive system, the structure of DNA, the ecological pyramids — are expected in the form given here.
The text is supported by detailed diagrams, flow charts, data tables and boxed notes, with exercises at the end of each chapter and a glossary at the back.
