This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) social science history textbook for Class X, India and the Contemporary World II. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, exercises, maps and captions are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is the prescribed history component of the Class 10 social science course for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
The book is organised around the making of the modern world and India's place in it. It opens in nineteenth-century Europe with the rise of nationalism — the French Revolution's legacy, the unification of Germany and Italy, and the idea of the nation-state — and then turns that lens on India in the chapter on nationalism here, covering the Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience and Quit India phases, the Rowlatt Satyagraha, Jallianwala Bagh, the Salt March and the differing responses of peasants, workers, business groups and the depressed classes. The remaining chapters take up themes rather than events: how a global economy was formed through trade, migration and capital flows; how industrialisation reshaped work and cities in Britain and India; and how print changed reading, religion, politics and the public sphere.
For Class 10 students this is the board syllabus, and the questions asked are typically source-based or "explain the causes/effects" questions drawn straight from the chapter text. For competitive-exam candidates the chapter on nationalism in India is the standard first reading on the freedom movement — the sequence of movements, sessions and Acts is set out cleanly here, and UPSC, RPSC and RSSB aspirants are routinely told to work through the NCERT history set before starting on any thicker reference. The world-history chapters are equally useful for the modern-world portion of those syllabi.
