About this book

This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) social science economics textbook for Class IX. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, exercises, tables and captions are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is the prescribed economics component of the Class 9 social science course for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum. The book introduces economics through cases rather than through definitions. It opens with the story of a fictional village, Palampur, and uses it to explain the factors of production — land, labour, physical capital and human capital — and how farm and non-farm activities are organised in rural India. The second chapter turns to people as a resource, covering education, health, unemployment and the composition of the workforce across the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. The third takes up poverty: how it is measured, the poverty line, which social and economic groups are most vulnerable, inter-state and global comparisons, and the anti-poverty programmes in place. The last chapter deals with food security — buffer stock, the public distribution system, ration cards, cooperatives and the role of the Food Corporation of India. For a Class 9 student, this is the board-track syllabus, and the questions asked are the case and data-based questions the chapters are built to support. For competitive-exam candidates the value is different: poverty estimation, food security, the PDS, employment classification and human capital are recurring topics in the UPSC, RPSC and RSSB syllabi, and the vocabulary a candidate needs — poverty line, buffer stock, disguised unemployment, minimum support price — is defined here plainly and for the first time. Aspirants are routinely advised to read the NCERT economics books from Class 9 onwards before starting on any standard reference text. The chapters are supported by tables, graphs, photographs and boxed examples, with in-chapter activities and full exercise sets at the end.
