This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) social science geography textbook for Class IX, Contemporary India I. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, exercises, maps and captions are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is the prescribed geography component of the Class 9 social science course for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
This volume is the physical geography of India, taken systematically. It opens with size and location — latitudinal and longitudinal extent, the standard meridian, India's neighbours and its position in the Indian Ocean. Physical features covers the major relief divisions: the Himalayas and their three parallel ranges, the Northern Plains and their sections, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the coastal plains and the islands. Drainage takes up the Himalayan and Peninsular river systems, their tributaries and basins, and the major lakes. Climate explains the monsoon — the factors controlling it, the mechanism, the seasons, and the distribution of rainfall. Natural vegetation and wildlife covers the forest types and the ecological regions they belong to. The last chapter, population, deals with size, distribution, density, growth, age composition, literacy, health and the concept of population as a resource.
Physical geography of India is a standing section in the UPSC, RPSC and RSSB syllabi, and this is the volume that carries it at the level a candidate first needs. The relief divisions, the river systems and their tributaries, the monsoon mechanism and the rainfall pattern are asked year after year, and the map work in this book — locating ranges, peaks, rivers, passes and states — is the same map work those examinations expect. Aspirants are routinely advised to read the NCERT geography books from Class 6 to Class 12 in sequence, and Class 9 and 10 together form the India core of that reading.
The chapters are supported by physical and thematic maps, data tables, photographs and diagrams, with in-chapter activities, map work and full exercise sets at the end.
