This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Hindi supplementary reader for Class IX, कृतिका भाग 1 (Kritika Bhag 1), prescribed for Hindi Course 'A'. Kritika Bhag 1 is the supplementary companion to क्षितिज भाग 1, the main Class 9 Hindi Course 'A' reader, and both are prescribed together for the full course. Where Kshitij is divided into short prose and poetry chapters with heavy language work, Kritika carries longer, complete pieces meant to be read whole — memoir, reportage, narrative essay and story. The prescribed set includes इस जल प्रलय में, मेरे संग की औरतें, रीढ़ की हड्डी and माटी वाली.
The supplementary reader is where a student stops answering on paragraphs and starts answering on a whole text. The questions after each chapter ask for the writer's purpose, the significance of an episode, the situation a character is placed in, and a written response in the student's own words — they cannot be answered from a summary. रीढ़ की हड्डी in particular, a play about a family arranging a match for their educated daughter, is examined on what the piece is arguing rather than on what happens in it.
Kritika Bhag 1 carries its own weightage in the Class 9 Hindi Course 'A' paper. Used alongside क्षितिज भाग 1, it completes the prescribed course.
