This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) social science economics textbook for Class X, Understanding Economic Development. The book asks what development actually means and then works outward from that question. For Class 10 students this is board material, and the paper is set on it directly — the case studies, the data tables and the definitions in these chapters are what source-based questions are drawn from. For competitive-exam candidates the same chapters are a standing part of the UPSC, RPSC and RSSB syllabi. Sectoral classification of the economy, HDI, credit and banking, and the effects of globalisation appear year after year, and the terms a candidate must be precise about — per capita income, disguised unemployment, collateral, terms of credit, liberalisation — are defined here plainly. Aspirants are routinely advised to read the NCERT economics books from Class 9 and 10 before starting on any standard economy reference or the Economic Survey.
