At board level the questions move well past retrieval. Each chapter closes with प्रश्न-अभ्यास on the content and the poet's or writer's intent, a रचना और अभिव्यक्ति section calling for a written response in the student's own words, and भाषा अध्ययन work on व्याकरण, अलंकार, मुहावरे and शब्द भंडार drawn from the text just read. The काव्य खंड in particular is examined on interpretation and भाव-सौंदर्य rather than on line-by-line meaning, which is why the prescribed text has to be read as written — a guide's summary strips out exactly what the board asks about.
