This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) Hindi supplementary reader for Class VI, बाल रामकथा (Bal Ramkatha). Bal Ramkatha is a retelling of the Ramayana in continuous, simple Hindi prose, written for readers of about eleven and twelve. It runs the whole narrative from अवधपुरी में राम through the events at Mithila, the exile, life in the forest, the abduction of Sita, the alliance with Sugriva, Hanuman's journey to Lanka, the war, and the return to Ayodhya. The chapters are short and the story is told straight — the point at this level is that the student reads a long narrative from beginning to end and holds the thread, which is a different skill from reading the individual chapters of a main reader.
The book does two things at once. It builds reading stamina in Hindi at a stage where most prescribed material is still short pieces, and it gives a student the shape of a story that a great deal of Hindi literature, idiom and reference later assumes they already know. Names, episodes and phrases from the Ramayana turn up constantly in the Hindi texts of higher classes, and a student who has read this book follows them without needing them explained.
Bal Ramkatha is prescribed alongside वसंत भाग 1 and दूर्वा भाग 1 for the Class 6 Hindi course. Questions from the supplementary reader are set in the school paper, so the book is best read as written rather than in summary. The text is illustrated throughout and each chapter ends with exercise questions on the events and characters.
