This book from Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers is an English medium (अंग्रेज़ी माध्यम) title by Dr. Rakesh Prasad Shrivastav, MS, FRCS, of the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu, with a foreword by Dr. Arun Agarwal. It covers diseases of the ear, nose and throat (कान, नाक एवं गला) together with head and neck surgery, and as the title says, it teaches through pictures — photographs, illustrations and tables carry a large part of the explanation.
The book is divided into eight sections and opens with an introduction to ENT examination, which sets the tone: the emphasis throughout is on clinical methods rather than description alone. Each following section takes an area of the head and neck, covers its anatomy, and then works through the diagnosis and treatment of the diseases and disorders belonging to it. Particular emphasis is placed on the pathophysiology of disease, which is what makes the management logic follow rather than needing to be memorised — useful in a subject where students often reduce everything to lists.
This second edition has been fully revised to bring students and trainees up to date with the advances in the specialty, adding skull base surgery, functional endoscopic sinus surgery and cochlear implantation, along with a complete new section dedicated to paediatric ENT — an area under-served in most undergraduate ENT books despite how much of actual ENT practice is paediatric. Every chapter closes with 'key points' summarising what matters, which is what makes the book workable for revision as well as for first reading. The previous edition was published in 2008.
