The chronological arrangement is the design decision that matters. Ancient India covers an enormous span — the Indus Valley civilisation through the Vedic period, the Mahajanapadas, the Mauryas, the post-Mauryan kingdoms, the Guptas and the early medieval transition — and the questions that separate serious candidates from casual ones are almost always about sequence and context rather than isolated fact. Which dynasty preceded which, which text belongs to which stratum, which site to which phase. Questions sorted by period build that framework as a by-product of practice; questions sorted at random do not, however many there are.
The explanations are what make it usable at the level of the examinations listed.
