This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) social science geography textbook for Class VII, Our Environment. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, exercises, maps and captions are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is the prescribed geography component of the Class 7 social science course for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
Where Class 6 geography places the Earth in the solar system, this book turns inward and studies the Earth's own systems. It opens by defining the environment and its natural, human and human-made components, then goes inside the Earth — the crust, mantle and core, the rock cycle and the three rock types. Our Changing Earth covers the movement of plates, earthquakes and volcanoes, and the landforms carved by rivers, sea waves, ice and wind. The chapter on air deals with the composition and structure of the atmosphere, weather and climate, temperature, air pressure and winds. Water covers the water cycle, ocean circulation, waves, tides and currents. Natural vegetation and wildlife takes up the forest types and the life they support. The book closes with human settlements, transport and communication, and two life-in-the-desert case studies — the Sahara and Ladakh.
This is the volume that carries most of physical geography at the introductory level, and physical geography is where competitive-exam candidates most often lose marks. Plate movement, rock types, atmospheric layers, pressure belts and winds, ocean currents and the agents of erosion are standing topics in the UPSC, RPSC and RSSB syllabi, and the explanations here — short, diagram-supported and free of shortcuts — are what aspirants are told to read before opening any thicker reference work. The NCERT geography sequence from Class 6 to Class 12 is a standard part of preparation, and this is its physical geography foundation.
The chapters are supported by diagrams, maps, photographs and boxed examples, with in-chapter activities and full exercise sets at the end.
