This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) social science history textbook for Class IX, India and the Contemporary World I. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, exercises, maps and captions are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is the prescribed history component of the Class 9 social science course for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
The book pairs world history with social history. The first three chapters cover the political upheavals that shaped the modern world: the French Revolution — the old regime, the events of 1789, the Jacobins and the Terror, the rise of Napoleon and the legacy of liberty and equality; socialism in Europe and the Russian Revolution — the February and October revolutions, Lenin, the civil war and the making of the Soviet state; and Nazism and the rise of Hitler — the Weimar Republic, the depression, Nazi ideology, the Holocaust and the machinery of the Nazi state. The remaining chapters shift register to look at how colonial rule reshaped ways of life: forest society and colonialism, covering colonial forest laws, the effect on forest communities and the Bastar and Java rebellions; and pastoralists in the modern world, covering nomadic pastoral communities in India and Africa and how colonial restrictions changed their movements.
For Class 9 this is the school syllabus, and the questions are source-based and cause-and-effect questions drawn from the chapter text. For competitive-exam candidates the first three chapters are the standard first reading on modern world history — the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution and Nazism recur every year in the UPSC, RPSC and RSSB world history sections, and the causation here is set out more clearly than in most thicker reference works. The forest and pastoralist chapters are useful for environment and society questions. Aspirants are routinely advised to read the NCERT history books from Class 6 to Class 12 before any standard reference.
The chapters are supported by photographs, political cartoons and posters, maps, and boxed extracts from contemporary writings, with activities through the chapters and full exercise sets at the end.
