This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) science textbook for Class IX. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, diagrams, worked examples and exercises are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is prescribed for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
Class 9 is where science stops being general and splits into its three disciplines, and this single volume carries all of them. The chemistry chapters begin with matter in our surroundings and the states of matter, then move to mixtures, solutions and separation techniques, the laws of chemical combination, mole concept, and the structure of the atom — electrons, protons, neutrons, valency and isotopes. The biology chapters take up the cell as the fundamental unit of life, its organelles, and plant and animal tissues, closing with improvement in food resources. The physics chapters cover motion and its graphical treatment, Newton's laws and momentum, gravitation with free fall, thrust, pressure and buoyancy, work, energy and power, and sound with its production, propagation, reflection and applications.
This is the year the foundation is laid for everything that follows. Mole concept, atomic structure, Newton's laws and the cell — the four things Class 10, Class 11 and every competitive examination after them are built on — are introduced here for the first time, and students who are shaky on them at this stage stay shaky. That is also why NTSE, olympiad and early NEET and JEE foundation programmes work directly from this text: the numerical examples in the motion, gravitation and work-energy chapters are pitched harder than the school paper requires and are worth doing in full.
Each chapter carries activities to be performed, solved examples worked step by step, in-text questions placed after each section, and a full exercise set at the end. The text is supported by diagrams, graphs and data tables throughout.
