This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) physics textbook for Class XII, Physics Part I — the first of the two-volume Class 12 physics set. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, derivations, worked examples and exercises are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is prescribed for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
Part I carries electrostatics, current electricity and electromagnetism — the largest single block of the Class 12 physics course. It begins with electric charges and fields, Coulomb's law, the electric dipole and Gauss's law and its applications, then moves to electrostatic potential, equipotential surfaces, capacitors and their combinations. Current electricity covers Ohm's law, resistivity, cells and their combinations, Kirchhoff's rules, the Wheatstone bridge and the potentiometer. The magnetism chapters take up the Biot-Savart law, Ampere's circuital law, the force on a current-carrying conductor, the moving coil galvanometer, and magnetism and matter. The last chapters deal with electromagnetic induction and Lenz's law, alternating current with LCR circuits, resonance and transformers, and electromagnetic waves.
These chapters carry the heaviest weightage in the Class 12 physics paper, and they are also the ones where the derivation matters as much as the answer — the board expects the derivation as set out in the text, with the same notation. For NEET and JEE candidates this volume is where most of the syllabus's numerical difficulty sits: electrostatics, current electricity and AC circuits are heavy scoring areas, and the intext questions here are frequently harder and more instructive than the end-of-chapter set. Coaching material adds volume and speed; the concepts and the standard derivations come from this book.
The text is supported by diagrams, circuit figures, data tables and solved examples worked step by step, with intext exercises through each chapter and a full exercise set at the end. Note that this is Part I — optics, dual nature of radiation and matter, atoms and nuclei, and semiconductor electronics are in Part II, and both volumes are needed for the complete Class 12 syllabus.
