This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) mathematics textbook for Class VIII. Class 8 is the bridge year between arithmetic and formal algebra. Mathematics at this stage is learned through the exercises, and this is where the prescribed book earns its place. Each concept is introduced with a worked example, followed by "Try These" prompts inside the chapter and a graded exercise set — the early questions checking mechanics, the later ones asking the student to identify which method applies. The chapters on linear equations, algebraic identities, exponents and factorisation are the ones that decide whether Class 9 and 10 algebra goes smoothly, and they repay being worked through completely rather than sampled.
Beyond school examinations, this is the standard base text for NTSE and mathematics olympiad foundation work at middle-school level; those programmes build on the NCERT exercises rather than replacing them. Answers are provided at the end of the book for independent checking.
