This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) mathematics textbook for Class VII. It is an English medium (Roman script) book — the complete text, worked examples, exercises and answers are in English, and there is no Hindi content in it. It is prescribed for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
Class 7 is where arithmetic starts turning into algebra. The book opens with integers and the rules for operating on negative numbers, then works through fractions and decimals and their multiplication and division. Data handling introduces mean, median, mode and bar graphs. Simple equations is the first proper algebra chapter — forming an equation from a statement and solving it by balancing. The geometry section covers lines and angles, the properties of triangles including the angle sum and Pythagoras property, and congruence of triangles with its criteria. Comparing quantities takes up percentage, profit and loss, and simple interest. Rational numbers extends the number system, and the later chapters deal with perimeter and area, algebraic expressions, exponents and powers, symmetry, and visualising solid shapes.
Mathematics at this level is learned by doing the exercises, not by reading the chapter, and this is where the prescribed book earns its place. Each concept is introduced through a worked example, followed by a "Try These" prompt inside the chapter, and then a graded exercise set — the early questions checking the mechanics and the later ones requiring the student to think about which method applies. The chapters on integers, simple equations and comparing quantities in particular are the ones that decide whether Class 8 and 9 algebra goes smoothly.
Beyond school examinations, this is the standard base text for NTSE and mathematics olympiad foundation work at middle-school level; those programmes build on the NCERT exercises rather than replacing them. Answers are provided at the end of the book, so a student can check work independently.
