This is the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) chemistry textbook for Class XII, Chemistry Part II — the second of the two-volume Class 12 chemistry set. It is an English medium (Roman script) book: the complete text, chemical nomenclature, worked examples and exercises are in English. It is prescribed for CBSE schools and for state boards that follow the NCERT curriculum.
Part II carries the organic chemistry portion of the Class 12 course. It opens with haloalkanes and haloarenes and the substitution and elimination mechanisms that run through the rest of the book, then moves to alcohols, phenols and ethers; to the carbonyl compounds — aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids; to amines and diazonium salts; and closes with biomolecules — carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, vitamins and nucleic acids. The chapters are sequenced so that each functional group builds on the reactions of the one before it, which is why organic chemistry is best read straight through in this order rather than dipped into.
For a Class 12 student the reason to work from this book is simple: the CBSE board paper is set on it. For a NEET or JEE candidate the reason is different but stronger. Organic chemistry in those examinations is a mechanism-and-reagent subject, and the reactions that appear are, with few exceptions, the reactions named in these chapters. Coaching material adds practice and speed; it does not replace the source. Candidates who can write out every conversion in the intext and end-of-chapter exercises here — with reagents and conditions — have covered most of what the examination will ask.
The text is supported by structural diagrams, reaction schemes and worked examples, with intext questions placed through each chapter and a larger exercise set at the end. Note that this is Part II — the physical and inorganic chemistry chapters, including solutions, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, the d- and f-block elements and coordination compounds, are in Part I, and both volumes are needed for the complete Class 12 syllabus.
