This is an English medium book from Arihant Publications, prepared for Paper-2 of the NTA UGC NET, JRF and SET examinations in the subject of English. It is built to the updated syllabus applicable from June 2019 onwards, and contains 3 model papers together with the latest solved papers. The entire book is written in English in the Roman script — which is as it should be, since English literature is the subject being examined and the paper itself is set in English, but it is worth stating for buyers comparing it against the Hindi medium subject guides in the same series.
Paper-2 is where the NET is actually decided. Paper-1 is common to every candidate and tests teaching and research aptitude at a level most graduates can reach with a few weeks of work; Paper-2 carries double the marks and tests the subject in depth. For English, that means the full ten units of the UGC syllabus — drama, poetry, fiction, non-fictional prose, language, English in India, literary criticism and theory, literary theory post-World War II, world literatures, and research methods — spanning several centuries and multiple national traditions. No candidate reads all of it. The difference between qualifying and not is usually how efficiently the ground is covered and how well the candidate has calibrated to the way the paper asks.
That is what the solved papers are for. Past NTA papers show which units are weighted heavily, how the chronology and matching questions are framed, and the level of textual detail actually expected — often an author-work-year association rather than a critical argument. The 3 model papers then apply that to the current syllabus under timed conditions. The June 2019 syllabus date is the specification to check on any NET English title, and this one is set to it.
