The Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM-AJAY) is initiative aimed at uplifting Scheduled Caste (SC) communities across India. Launched to combat poverty and enhance socio-economic conditions, the scheme focuses on generating employment and improving education. Recently, the central advisory committee convened to review its progress and strategise future actions.
The primary objective is to reduce poverty among SC communities. This is achieved through skill development and income-generating initiatives. The scheme also aims to increase literacy rates and encourage SC enrolment in educational institutions, particularly in aspirational districts.
PM-AJAY comprises three main components:
As of FY 2023-24, progress has been made. A total of 1,834 villages have been designated as Adarsh Gram. The grants-in-aid component has approved plans for 17 states, enhancing livelihood projects. Additionally, 15 new hostels have been sanctioned to support SC students in higher education.
Effective implementation requires collaboration among various stakeholders. The committee emphasised the importance of community participation and enhanced project monitoring mechanisms. Continuous assessment of socio-economic indicators is essential for ensuring the scheme’s success.
The focus moving forward will be on strengthening partnerships with state and district authorities. Increased funding for skill development and infrastructure projects is crucial. The scheme aims to empower SC individuals and promote inclusive growth across India.
